Introducing Servergraph’s Data Protection Expert Product

For customers using a backup product other than TSM, Servergraph has an alternative besides the industry leading Servergraph Professional. Data Protection Expert (DPE) provides a single application to report and manage an enterprise backup environment. And it doesn’t matter whether the backup application used is NetBackup, TSM, Networker, or a mix of all three (and existing SGP customers can purchase DPE for their NetBackup or Networker environment and monitor an existing SGP managed TSM environment for no additional charge).

DPE handles billing, monitors compliance with service level agreements, sends out automated alerts, scheduled reports, reports on backups out of normal backup window, etc. But the single greatest strength of DPE is that it “scopes” a backup environment the way the way the customer sees it, with backup clients treated as part of an enterprise and not merely the subject of a particular backup server.

A scope of clients, used for reporting purposes, security limitations, etc. can include clients of any backup application, data center, operating system – there are no limitations whatsoever; if it’s a client of any managed server, it can be included in as many scopes as is appropriate. Here are some suggestions for DPE scopes and sub-scopes to make enterprise backup management easier:

Exchange Systems: Exchange admins have a significant interest in backups. A scope with all exchange clients allows them to view the status of their particular servers and/or produce daily reports on the systems they care about.

UNIX Systems (with sub-scopes for Linux, AIX, Solaris, etc.): Many companies have a general UNIX admin group but a need to report on specific brands of UNIX as well.

Oracle, or other Database/Application (with sub-scopes for Windows based clients, UNIX based, etc.): As with UNIX, an admin team may need to report on backups for an application overall, as well as the O.S. it resides on.
