Get a Clear View of Your HSM Environment
Many organizations do not have the time or tools necessary to determine the health of their HSM environments. Mainstar is offering a FREE HSM “Health Check” for organizations that want to get a snapshot of how their systems are performing.
The Health Check includes two kinds of analysis:
CDS Health
- Understand the amount of healthy data vs. unhealthy data in your system
- Discover more about critical errors or possible data loss
- Know where you can immediately offset costs on new hardware purchases
- Understand estimated costs for CDS maintenance
- Multi-cluster CDS performance
HSM Usage
Determine the amount of space, instructions, MIPs and estimated costs for:
- Thrashing
- Recall/Recover
- Backup
- Migration
- Extent Reduction
- Aged Data

Daily Thrashing Costs
Thrashing is usually caused by assigning an improper MGMTCLAS which means data sets are migrated and recalled too quickly. It is recommended that no more than 10 percent of migrated data be recalled daily. This chart displays the costs associated with data sets that are thrashing.
| ESTIMATED TRASHING COST PER DAY | |||||
| # Data Sets | Total Tracks | Daily CPU Secs | Daily Cost | Annual CPU Seconds | Annual Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6,763 | 65,682,256 | 5747.20 | $1,436 | 2097727.05 | $524,140 |
HSM Activity Failure SummaryThis summary information allows you to research specific failures and take action to correct the failures. By correcting or reducing the amount of migration, backup and recall failures, you can ensure data is properly managed by DFSMShsm, saving valuable HSM and CPU resources as well as maintaining data accessibility. |
